So in Houston, Texas, school starts on August 24th.
As a fourth grade teacher, one of my priorities is how to maximize instructional
time to develop and mold my students into proficient writers – Failing the
writing STAAR is not an option in my room.
This year my team and I didn’t want to wait
until school started to begin the writing process with our students so we created
plans for The First Annual S@SGP Writing Camp! See, what we are trying to do is
be a little bit sneaky about how to engage our students in writing. The fact
that we are calling this a camp suggests that it will be fun, and the big
selling factor is it is FREE to all incoming fourth graders. We advertised at
the end of last year and now we are up and running. We are doing our best to prep our
kids for fourth grade writing!
We have the kids for two hours a day, and while I
could go on and on about all the details of the camp, I’ll try to stick to just
the highlights.
One of our main goals for writing camp was to
familiarize our students with the eight parts of speech – considering these are
the building blocks for writing. I love
using foldables, but have a hard time getting my students to get all the
necessary information written down in a timely fashion. To help remedy this problem, I created a
fill-in-the-blank foldable to teach the eight parts of speech. Plus what kid
doesn’t love folding paper!
It ended up working out great. It was a quick
and effective way to introduce the eight parts of speech and the fact that it
was interactive kept the kids engaged. If you need an easy, yet effective way to
introduce the eight parts of speech check out this product in my TPT store.
Looking forward to a great week of writing camp!
